How old is old enough for contacts?

Wes is ten now and he has had glasses since the first grade. Truthfully though I am so proud of how he has handle wearing glasses and the fact that I haven’t had to replace tons of pairs of broken glasses like my mom did when I was a child when I got my first pair of glasses in the 3rd grade. Thank you mom!

Anyway he had started bringing up the dreaded question of when can he get contacts? I wasn’t sure how to answer him, honestly I was not even sure a doctor would prescribe them for him at his age. I told him to be a little patient and to wait until he was a little bit older. He did understand that, I did ask his eye doctor though and he told me that at his age he can get them but it is mostly girls who do because they are generally more mature than boys. He is very mature for his age and I do think that he could handle it, I just don’t know if I can.

In preparation for when he does get them, I did check out 1-800 Contacts to see what kinds of contacts there were and check out the selection. I even looked at colored contacts, thinking maybe I could talk my own eye doctor into prescribing me a pair. I could totally use some brighter blue eyes!

Enough about my fantasies of bright blue eyes. Do any of you guys have children who have contacts? And how old were they when they got them? Or what age would you suggest?

I did tell Wes that we would probably wait until he was 12 or 13.

I think I was 12 or 13 when I first started wearing contacts. I think this is a good age since contacts are a lot more maintenance than glasses. I do remember some girls I was friends with that would start wearing them as early as 4th or 5th grade but it definitely wasn’t the norm.

I really hope we don’t have to deal with this all all with Sweet T. I’ve had perfect vision my whole live, but Hubs has needed corrective lenses since he was a child. He didn’t start wearing contacts until he was an older teen but really wishes his parents would have let him sooner. 12 or 13 is probably just right. Thanks for the info!

That’s a good question – I think he’s probably old enough but it’s definitely a personal choice. I should really get some myself since I don’t wear my glasses enough like I should, but I’m still a little freaked out my contacts, as dumb as that sounds! I’m worried I’d forget to change them too often!
