Keeping Your Kids Hydrated During the Heat

As mothers, we know how active our kids can be during the summer. Whether they’re running through the sprinklers, swimming at the neighborhood pool, or playing soccer in the blistering heat, it’s extremely important to make sure they stay hydrated. Kids lose a lot of sweat in the hot summer climate and are at a high risk for dehydration if they don’t drink enough water. Even when they’re not thirsty, it’s important that they drink before and during vigorous physical activity. Make sure your children drink enough water when they’re home and carry a water bottle around with them when they are away from at camps or games.

Some parents make the mistake of giving their kids sodas, fruit juice, or sports drinks instead of pure water, which can create their own problems. Sports drinks are full of sugar and calories and contribute very little to a child’s necessary supply of nutrients. Some fruit juice has nutritional value for children, but it is also full of sugar and should never be used to hydrate instead of water. Soda has absolutely no nutritional value whatsoever and is very unhealthy for children. It actually serves to dehydrate children, as caffeinated beverages have a diuretic effect which extracts precious liquid from the body.

When you give your children water, you should also make sure that it’s clean and pure. Most parents don’t know the content of the tap water that our families drink. The amount of contaminants in your tap water may surprise you. Chlorine, chloramines, heavy metals such as lead and copper, VOCs (volatile organic compounds), and more are all possibilities. Although this water hydrates your kids, it may lead to other problems such as headaches and long-term illnesses down the road. To make sure your children are hydrated and healthy at the same time, you may want to install a whole house water filtration system.

Water filtration systems effectively remove the contaminants that your children shouldn’t drink. As a result, your water tastes pure and clean without the dangerous chemicals parents worry about. You no longer have to spend unnecessary amounts of money on bottled water for clean water, either. Water filters purify the water throughout your home, so you don’t have to worry about your children showering in impure water as well. If health is a priority for you and your children, make sure that you have clean, pure water in your household.

  1. This is brilliant advice. I find that, even when kids are hot and breathless from playing in the sun, they still don’t ask for a drink unless they are really thirsty- which means they are already dehydrated! Keep them topped up and happy, that’s what I say.
