Something a little different for me

Recently I decided that I was tired of plain brown hair with blond highlights and I was going to try something totally different.  My thought was that I was going to dye my hair black underneath and bright like fire engine red on the bottom underneath.  My thought is that it would like really cool because my hair is layered and the red would be at the bottom and kind of peaking through.  Well I did it by dividing my hair in two sections the part I wanted black and the part that I wanted red.  Well I put the red on first and wrapped that hair so that the black wouldn’t touch it.  Then I had the black put on.  I was kind of disappointed in the results the black turned out perfectly exactly like I wanted while the red is extremely dark and just kind of blends in with the black.  I am going to do some research on how I can achieve the color I want.   If anyone does any dying with bright colors ike the red I am speaking of, do you have any tips for me or how do you achieve the bright look?

Is using henna also called dyeing? I do not have much gray, but I got this tip from my friend to use henna as a natural hair dye. I tried this and my gray turned golden and looks like a streak of highlights. They are good for a least 3 months until the next treatment.
