What is Memorial Day?

I always knew that Memorial Day was a day that we got to miss school, that the banks were closed and that we got an extra paid day of work or if we were lucky the day off. I just never knew why. So I decided to take it to the internet and see if I could find out why. I knew that this year that it falls on Monday, May 30, 2011. So what I found that is that Memorial Day used to be known as Decoration Day. Memorial Day is for commemorating U.S. soldiers who died while serving in the military.

Memorial Day started after the Civil War to honor Union Soldiers, after World War 1 it then was used for honoring all American’s who died in Wars. Today however Memorial Day is used more for the remembrance of relatives whether they served in the Military or not.

Memorial Day also marks the start of the summer vacation and many use the time for family get-togethers, shopping, fireworks, picnics, and more.

Now I am trying to figure out what we are going to be doing for our Memorial Day this year, I am betting we end up with bbq and swimming.

How are you going to spend your Memorial Day?

Comments

  1. My husband has to work, so me and the kids will just spend time with my parents.

  2. I don’t know that we’ll do anything special – probably go over to my mother-in-law’s for a BBQ if my crazy SIL and her family don’t show up 🙂 Other than that just relax as a family.
